Can't build nRF Connect SDK example: compiler can't build object files with generated compile options

Hello! I've run into a problem after updating much of the environment (cmake, ninja, python, git, etc.) that I can't compile the code in nRF Connect SDK now. 

Initially I observed this problem on a project using an older version of nCS (1.6.1)  and gnuarmemb toolchain, so I thought, maybe it's somehow conflicting with the updated environment. So I updated nCS to 2.2.0 and downloaded new zephyr-sdk-0.15.2 toolchain. But no, the same problem. It occurs to me now on both versions of nCS and with both toolchains (compilers)

Ok, so I go to nrf/samples/crypto/ecdsa and try to execute west build -b nrf5340dk_nrf5340_cpuapp

And the build shortly fails with the following output:

OK, it looks a lot like the similar threads where the error was because of too long paths. But I tried moving my nCS into the D:/ drive directly and it was the same.

Now, this doesn't give much info about the error besides "FAILED", so I try to call CMake without west first:

So, long paths weren't the problem here. But cmake and ninja generate these options with the relative paths.

See part of build.ninja (generated in the build directory) which corresponds to this file. DEP_FILE has a relative path:

So it doesn't seem to be wrong, but why could it fail?
I've tried compiling it with verbose options, but there was no difference apart from relative paths and failing instead of succeeding.
Maybe you can suggest something else to test and try?

Hi,

Are you installing the SDK through the Toolchain Manager in nrf Connect for Desktop? That is the recommended way to install the SDK, and should install all necessary tools(cmake, python etc.).
You do not need to install these yourself, and you do not need to download the zephyr sdk separately. Installing them yourself should not be a problem, but it can sometimes cause issues.

After installing the SDK you should open the command line window through the drop-down menu next to the installed SDK version in Toolchain Manager:

Opening the command line window from here ensures that the environment is correctly configured.

Could you try that, and see if that solves the issues? If you still have issues, please post the new build log.

No, I installed it from the command line, using the page Installing manually as a reference. And it used to work.

Your assumption for suggesting the toolchain manager would be that the computer is mostly used for programming Nordic devices and the whole environment can be suited for that. Unfortunately, this isn't always the case. I use tools like python, cmake, ARM GCC compiler and such for other things too, and having multiple instances of them is not always desired, as it's confusing, not very flexible and occupies more disk space. It's cool when it works on a fresh virtual machine, but much more difficult when a lot of software and env variables already installed. 

Anyway, I tried previous versions of the compiler, cmake and ninja and the result is still the same.
I don't know how validity of the SDK setup is verified, but I have the west-updated 2.2.0 nCS, env variables ZEPHYR_BASE and ZEPHYR_TOOLCHAIN_VARIANT are set as per the instruction, and have executed the setup.cmd in the Zephyr SDK toolchain to update the registry values.

It could be that everything is set, but other software and paths also exist and something may be in conflict?

Fixed this, turned out it was because of the ccache executable in my PATH (the tool to speed up compilation). And also, I didn't have to get rid of it, just reinstalled it.

My Chocolatey/lib/ccache/tools had several versions of ccache, older ones still present, and a shim in Chocolatey/lib (which was in my PATH) referring to I don't know which version. So deleted the shim, uninstalled and reinstalled the package and now it can compile.
