BLE Central and Peripheral Working DFU Support

I am developing a firmware for NRF52833 using NRF5 SDK. In this firmware, the device works in BLE Central mode. I want to use the BLE DFU feature to update the firmware of the device.

At this point, there are two questions I would like to ask you.

  1. For BLE DFU, the device needs to be in BLE peripheral role and advertising, right, cannot update while device is in Central role?
  2. Is it possible for the device to be both peripheral and central? I've seen this possible on the S140. If possible, can I do BLE DFU by operating the device in both central and peripheral roles? Is there any ready example about this?

  • Hi,

    Correct.

    Yes.

If possible, can I do BLE DFU by operating the device in both central and peripheral roles? Is there any ready example about this?

Let's say your application is a central. When you enter bootloader mode, in order to do the DFU, it will become a peripheral. Another central connects, sends the new image, the chip is reset, your new application starts up, as a central.
