Is the use of (external) antennas required to receive/send LTE and GPS signal or is this function build-in to the NRF 9160 itself already?

Hey Bob,
You need an antenna connected to the nRF9160, yes. The nRF9160 has pins to connect LTE or GPS antennas to.
All the functionality of sending and receiving etc is part of the modem inside the nRF9160, but you need to attach physical antennas to it.
When speaking of external antennas here, there's usually referencing antennas with coax plug, as opposed to chip-mounted antennas or similar. In any scenario, you need some type of antennas as well for the nRF9160 to work with communication.
