Direction Finding Accuracy

Hello!

I am working on a project that uses distance measurements. I am considering purchasing the nRF5340 to use for direction finding to measure Angle of Arrival and Angle of Departure. I have found the samples for this feature as per the image below, with the direction finding beacon being most relevant to my project.

May I know if there are any estimates of the accuracy of the AoA and AoD measurements that I can use as a baseline? Is the accuracy the same for other Nordic boards that support direction finding such as the nRF52833?

I plan to use the direction finding feature with version 2.2.99 of the nRF Connect SDK.

Thank you for your help.

  • Hi,

The accuracy depends on the antenna array that is used. More antennas that is used in the antenna array often results in better performance. With our antenna array with only 1 locater, you'll get about 10 cm accuracy in a radius of about 20 meter in a noise free environment. But this will only give you the direction, since it's only 1 locater, if you're using multiple locaters (3 minimum) then you can triangulate the position and also get the relative position of the device.

The 52 and 53 series has about the same performance in terms of the direction finding.

    regards
