nRF52 DK V3.0.0 Debug out for programming external board can't work

Hello Nordic,

I have been using nRF52-DK to perform a process of programming. Within the process, I need to access the external board's nRF52 and the OB-nRF52 both.(Not at the same time)

I make a schema of connection by simplifying the system:

By turn ON/OFF the Power supply, I can toggle the logic level of pin SELECT/VGT to choose the target of debugger:

• Power Supply ON: SELECT/VGT is High -> Target of debugger is the external board.
• Power Supply OFF: SELECT/VGT is Low -> Target of debugger is the OB-nRF52.

This scenario was working well with a DK < rev.2.2.0, but doesn't work at all with the new DK rev.3.0.0.

Problem-1: Incorrect logic level of SELECT/VGT

Always on the above scenario, when the Power supply is ON, the target of debugger is the external board, that's correct.

However, once turning OFF the Power supply, I can't access to the expected target, OB-nRF52, with the following error:

With the multimeter, the voltage on pin SELECT/VGT is 0.79V.

Meanwhile, by disconnecting the link (VGT+SWDIO+SWDCLK+GND) between nRF52-DK and the external board, the voltage of pin SELECT/VGT is 0V.

Problem-2: Can not boot on Bootloader mode

Always using the same method that power up the nRF52-DK by pressing the button BOOT/RESET. The DK always boot on JLINK mode, not Bootloader mode.

I tested 2 DK rev.3.0.0 and got the same result. But with DK rev.2.1.0, it booted correctly on Bootloader mode.

Do you have any idea?

I have been seeing similar issues on the nRF52 DK v3.0.0 specifically.

Could the issue be:

* nRF52 DK v3.0.0 doesn't have a GND Detect signal, while the v2.1.0 does. Could that be the issue?

* the nRF52840 DK is running on 3.0V while the target is at 3.3V (not an issue on older version of nRF52840 DK)

I always see this issue if I try to program the target when I forget to turn on the 3.3V power supply on the target. It seems like an issue on the nRF52 DK side.

I seems like the pin GND_Detect is GND now.

Without connecting GND_Detect with a GND pin, I used the multimeter to test the connectivity that GND_Detect is actually connected with GND. 

I tested also by connecting/disconnecting GND_DETECT, always the same result, so I don't think this is the issue.

Otherwise, I have no idea what's going on this new DK... I'm feeling also it seems like an issue on the DK side.

Thank you GudniMar, you gave me an inspiration. Actually I kept the connect on the P20, so that the GND_DETECT was connected to GND of the external board, that's why my multimeter told me they are connected to each other. 

According to the eletronic schematic, GND_DETECT isn't exist, I guess the new interface MCU doesn't need it. 

I think Nordic should update the official documentation about the rev.3.0.0 which is currently still on rev.2.2.0, that will be very helpful for the user.

I have tried to look a bit into this, fyi v2.2.0 and v3.0.0 hardware files can be download from:

Looking for instance at v2.2.0 for header P20:

vs.  v3.0.0 for header P20:

So on v3.0.0 I can see the SH_GND_DETECT is no longer used (or connected to GND!), instead to select this SWD interface rely on SELECT pin (previously known as SH_VTG) is active high when the user want to program the remote board. In other words it rely on "seeing" that the remote board is powered (not that it's grounded).

So, previously you needed to connect remote gnd the gnd detect, while now you need to feed remote power to the SELECT pin (which previously was intended to be used for target voltage in any case).

But all that said, this does not explain why you only measure 0.79V on the SELECT pin. However, considering P20 doesn't have any GND pin, I assume you need to connect the remote GND to a GND pin on the nRF52-DK now (you can find GND pin on P1 and P24).

Actually that's exactly what I did, the GND of DK was connected to GND_DETECT and GND of the external board. 

To be confirmed, I tested it again today and got the same error.

The SELECT pin here is really an input here, so if you are only able to drive this pin to 0.79V, then it's either a short in R22 (1Mohm) or the there is a short in Q2 (mosfet). Are you able to find which may have been damaged (e.g. remove R22 for test)?

I'd say rather the pin SELECT was able to be driven correctly to 3V3 (or 3V) when DC power supply is turning ON in my case. (Refer to the schema in the ticket description for the position of DC power supply)

A particular point is that the Power supply doesn't connect directly to SELECT, but over a DC regulator. That means it's the output of regulator connected to SELECT, and there is no force to put SELECT down to 0V while Power supply is OFF.

In case of connecting directly the Power supply to the pin SELECT (with another external board with a different electronic design), the electrical level of pin SELECT is able to be aligned by the Power supply. In this case everything is OK.

BTW, by removing R22, the SELECT pin is 0.67V instead of 0.79V, but still got the same error.
