Getting Started with nRF7002

I am trying to get going with the nRF7002, ideally with the nRF52840 but the devkit uses the nRF5340 which is also acceptable though overkill for my several applications. I'm not asking for complete hand-holding, but I am getting lost installing the tools. When I started with the nRF52832 several years back, it was straightforward to get a sample project up and running, then build on that project to develop a product. Not so much now.

I was told at first back then that Visual Studio was the "approved solution" for an IDE. Later I was told it was changed to Segger, so I made the (mildly painful) switch. I still have projects in development, and volume products to support, using Segger. However, now I'm told that I have to switch back to VS for any further support. I have installed VS as well as the latest nRF Connect and Command Line tools, but I quickly get lost in the maze when trying to follow the Getting Started guide - I'm not at all clear which of these myriad loose piece I actually need to install (West, Zephyr, Choclatey,, etc.) and I can't even begin to find any sample code / projects on the Nordic website. By step 2 of the guide I run into a bunch of command lines that simply fail.

Right now I just need BLE and WiFi with an nRF52840 and/or nRF5340. I am quite adept at taking sample code and adding on the pieces needed for my application, but I cannot afford to spend a week figuring out how to install the tools, plus another few weeks getting a basic simple sample project working. The user guides I have found so far have been no help; I must be starting in the wrong place. Can somebody please set me straight?
