Unable to uninstall or upgrade nrfconnect for desktop

I have been using nrfConnect for Desktop on Windows for many years.  I have version 4.01 installed.  I sometimes get prompted to upgrade but when I try to complete the upgrade it fails after downloading.  I also get an error when I try to uninstall.  The error says "nrfConnect for Desktop cannot be closed"   

I have tried this immediately after rebooting and get the same problem.  I have searched for any running application in task manager and it doesn't exist.  I suspect some lock file is left behind from a previous crash, but I have no idea where to look.

I have forwarded your question to our nRF Connect for Desktop developers and I hope to have an answer by tomorrow.

Are you able to open nRF Connect for Desktop before updating? Does this give you a normal window? If so, are you able to open the Developer Console (CTRL+SHIFT+I)?

Yes the version of nrfConnect for Desktop works just fine, but I cannot update it.  The developer console does open as well.

Do you get any errors in the developer console if you try updating the app while it is open? Are there any messages in the developer console?

The first step in the upgrade process closes all running applications, so no I won't be able to see any errors in the developer console.

BTW, this is the main problem.. all applications must be closed and even if they are all closed it still keeps saying there are applications open.. maybe there is some lock file left behind?

We're not able to reproduce the issue. I forgot to ask last time, but have you tried to install without uninstalling? 

Edit: Rephrased my question as I forgot that you cannot uninstall. 

What is the length of your username and do you have a non-default LOCALAPPDATA environment variable?
