Matter Litghtswitch example v2.6.0 not connecting to border router control system. (Smartthings Station )

While experimenting with the v2.6.0 set of matter examples, it was noticed by an associate that the LightSwitch example doesn't seem to want to connect to any networks. This is compiled right in the directory C:\ncs\v2.6.0\nrf\samples\matter\light_switch. This is with the nrf52840-DK board, using the prj_no_dfu.conf and the standard overlay for the nrf52840 dk board.

The Lightbulb example works fine, connects properly. Anyone seen this occur?
A M

P.S. why doesn't the tags engine have a Matter  tag?

  • Hi A M,

At which point in the connection procedure does the device fail?

Please share the log from the DK from boot to unsuccessful connection.

    Best regards,

    Maria

P.S. I added a Matter tag manually for your ticket.

  • Sorry about the delay on this.
This is the 2.6.0 version of the Matter Switch example.

After starting the Binding, the above is shown on the serial output. After this, the connection will time out.

This is an nrf52840DK board, the no dfu build I believe.

oops, you asked for the full boot

  • I am guessing from the lack of response that no one else has seen this?

  • Hello,

I can confirm that I get the same log when booting the light switch v2.6.0 and I will continue to work on this.

Are you able to initiate the commissioning with one of the above methods from the log?

If you have a log from the Smartthings app this could be helpful too.

This can happen during first boot. See the comment in the relevant source file modules\lib\matter\src\app\clusters\bindings\BindingManager.cpp here.

    Best regards,

  • Yeah, sorry nothing from the app, I am afraid. I really don't know if it has that kind of debug dump. That would be nice for them to have this kind of MODE but realistically, keeping the details out of general users hands is pretty much status quo.

  • Any more information on this? You verified the output, but did you have the same problem of not being able to connect to the device?

  • Hello,

    Sorry about the delay.

I don't have a SmartThings hub available, so I can't test the full functionality. I did find that I got the same log for the Matter light switch as you did without initiating commissioning.

I notice that you did not answer the question from my last reply:

Please answer if you are able to start commissioning and which method you are trying.

Some screenshots from the SmartThings app can also help.

  • Ah, I guess I missed the detail.  My comment of "doesn't seem to want to connect to any networks" isn't that helpful.
    The operation was as follows.

    • Unit would power off, announcement wouldn't function.
    • We could enable announcement using the command line interface.
    • The application would attempt to connect the device to the network. Serial output from the nrf52 would give the impression that the unit was connecting.
    • nrf52 board would then get stuck, phone software would time out eventually.

I don't have the logs saved. I will attempt to power another unit up and capture the complete log output.
(not a great response I guess)

  • Hi,

This ticket has been reassigned to me.

Please upload the complete application log from the device when you have it.

Are you able to test with chip-tool to see if you can commission the light switch using this? This could be useful in figuring out whether the issue is with Samsung Smartthings or with the sample itself.

    Best regards,
    Marte

  • Hi, I am glad this is still being given consideration. I am currently multitasking so it may be a few days till I can reply. My plan is as follows:
    - Install the switch example from 1.5.2 and verify that still functions. I think I did this before but perhaps I didn't', I didn't write it down if I did. This will at least confirm that example code CAN connect to the Samsung device/system. I will keep a log of the nrf52DK output. If it doesn't work, then I will assume there was some kind of firmware change to the Samsung system that is the culprit and we can consider this closed in the short term.

    - Install the switch example from 1.6.x and verify its operation with the Samsung unit, capturing the complete log output. At this point I can post this and see if something can be ascertained from this.

-Pull out the raspberry pi with the chip-tools and see what I can get from this.

I will say this is all in service to Nordic. We are currently working with a mostly functional switch sensor.
