DTM not compiling for nRF52811

Hello,

I am trying to run the Direct Test Mode on a custom board. We have two boards revisions, one with a nRF52832 and one with a nRF52811. I managed to build the DTM for the nRF52832 one and I edited the app.overlay to match the pinctrl we use on our custom board regarding the UART pins.

Everything is working fine on this one and I could even test it both with the CLI and the GUI provided in nRF for Desktop.

After that, I tried to make it work on the nRF52811 one but I get FATAL_ERROR during the compiling step :

I use the same overlay as we also have mapped the UART pins on pin 5 and 3 for this board. I also tried to remove my modification in the app.overlay, trying to build for a Dev Kit version of the 52811 and I still have the exact same error.

Can I have some support to make this compile?

DTM assumes that DFE is present, so you need to add this to your overlay, which is boards/nrf52840dk_nrf52811.overlay in your case:

I added the file you provided and I still have the same error. I did not changed the pins from your file so I don't know if I am supposed to adapt something from the nrf52833dk_nrf52820 to make it work on nrf52811.

Hi Håkon,

I tested the image built with line commented. It is building fine and I have boot up logs in the RTT console but the Nordic GUI struggle to communicate with the board. Can it be a consequence of changes made in the CMakeLists or DFE that we enabled?

Hi Fabien,

 

DFE gpios are only used if there's a command specific for direction finding from the tester, so these should not have any effect on the GPIOs.

You can change the P0.03 pin in the DTE configuration if you ever plan to use DFE.

 

Could the issue be related to the DCDC/32k setting?

If you do not have dcdc inductors present, you should set CONFIG_BOARD_ENABLE_DCDC=n

If you rely on using internal 32k RC oscillator, you should set CONFIG_CLOCK_CONTROL_NRF_K32SRC_RC.

I checked another project I have on the same board and both the CONFIG_BOARD_ENABLE_DCDC and the CONFIG_CLOCK_CONTROL_NRF_K32SRC_RC have the same values in my project build and in the DTM build. I expect it's not coming from these parameters.

Have you checked the voltage level on the P0.03/P0.05 pins? The "TXD" pin should be high, while the RXD pin will be left floating (To be pulled high by the UART receiver)

 

Could it be that you have mismatched RXD/TXD pins? Currently you have P0.03 as TXD and P0.05 as RXD.

Hello Håkon,

I checked back to confirm that the UART is working fine and the pins are set correctly.

Here is a picture with the output of the RTT terminal confirming that the DTM is flashed on the board :

You also have the generated zephyr.dts file opened on the same picture if you want to check values.

And here is the output of the DTM GUI when I try to get make it work with the nRF52811.

In the meantime, if you have any updates regarding the state of the bug we saw earlier and when it will be fixed officially, I am interested.

Thanks for sharing the compiled pinctrl. I think I know what the issue is.

 

In the original uart0_default definition, there are two groups, one for the outputs (group1) and one for the inputs (group2).

RXD will be located on the group2 and will not be overwritten by the .overlay that you have created.

 

What you could do is to rename your uart0_my_custom_default and point to that, similar to this:

			psels = <NRF_PSEL(UART_TX, 1, 0)>,
				<NRF_PSEL(UART_RTS, 0, 10)>;

Unfortunately, it is still open internally, and the next major release is 2.7.0.
