How to restore the device Hw v2?

I have the nRF Hw v2, and it seems like I did something wrong with a Fw:

nRF is recognizable by a computer as the COM10/11/12 device:

Most of the nRF Connect Desktop applications could recognize the device, but, unfortunately, they can not connect to it, and return an error:

or return nothing:

t looks like the Fw Application is loaded on the nRF and it is booted properly, while the modem does not respond.

Is there any Fw for the modem?

I saw some Segger software tool, and it offers to restore some image from time to time. Could it be connected to this problem?

  • Hi,

    Looks like the recover command faild, not sure why, other errors you see are related to APPROTECT being enabled. Try one of the following steps:

    Can you test with the use of the command line to nrfjprog, https://www.nordicsemi.com/Products/Development-tools/nRF-Command-Line-Tools/Download , you can use a command called recover, so all you have to do is run "nrfjprog --recover" from a terminal.

    Seems that APPROTECT is enabled witch is stopping you from reading the memory, so a recover command should solve this. You can also do this with nRF UTIL tool, https://www.nordicsemi.com/Products/Development-tools/nRF-Util/Download#infotabs,  then you need to get the devices module and run this command " nrfutil device recover"

    Regards,
    Jonathan

  • Jonathan, greetings.

    The nrfjprog --recover returns the next:

    C:\Program Files\Nordic Semiconductor\nrf-command-line-tools\bin>nrfjprog --recover
    [error] [ JLink] - Not supported by current CPU + target interface combination.
    [error] [ JLink] - Not supported by current CPU + target interface combination.

    Recovering device. This operation might take 30s.
    Restored application UICR.HFXOSRC and UICR.HFXOCNT.
    Erasing user code and UICR flash areas.

    C:\Program Files\Nordic Semiconductor\nrf-command-line-tools\bin>

    And the board still returns a error during the initial setup:

    Br., Toni.

  • Hi Toni, can you share the Log file that is generated here?

    But looks like you where able to recover the board successfully, you can confirm this with connecting it to the programmer app and reading out the device, it should give you a visual that shows the device is empty.

    The device also does not show up as a DK witch is a little odd.

    What version of the DK are you using?

    Also can you try on a different computer, looks like you are running it on the CMW machine, not sure how well our GUI applications run on those.

    Regards,
    Jonathan

  • Jonathan, greetings.

    We have changed from a CMW instrument to a regular W10 laptop:

    Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.19045.5371],

    Admin rights,

    UAC is disabled,

    Symantec and the default Windows firewall are active, there is no possibility to disable them in the Company domain.

    The nRF Connect for Desktop is v5.1.0, the Quick Start v1.2.0.

    The Programmer v4.5.0 indicates, that the DK is NRF9160_xxAA_REV1.

    The label is on the DL indicates the next:

    PCA10090,

    0.8.3,

    2018.51,

    960035269, that should be the DK serial number.

    There is no any jumper set except on the External supply contacts, and the Hw settings are:

    Sw10 = left,

    Sw11 = right,

    Sw1 = left,

    Sw8 = right (SIM, but no a SIM card is inserted),

    Sw1 = right (N.C.),

    Sw2 = right (N.C.),

    Sw5 = right (nRF91).

    The LED indication is:

    LED5 = permanent,

    LED1 = permanent.

    From my experience, it worked before with the Fw below version nrf9160dk_fw_2021-12-15_cfedfdfa , the SDK v1.8.0, the Asset Tracker v1.

    The log, that is created after the Quick Start is used is below:

    I see that you have a very old DK here.

    Did some testing and it seems that the Old DK does not work as expected here. I did test one of my old v1.0.0 DK and the behavior is the same.

    Not sure why that is, will investigate and report infernally.

    Jonathan
