Concurrent ble Central and Peripheral Implementation Problem in nrf528232

Hi,

We are currently starting a project using the nRF52832 as our controller, Segger Embedded Studio 5.42a as our IDE, and nRF5 SDK version 17.0.2.

Project Requirement Explanation:

I want to create an nRF52832-based gateway module that can connect peripheral devices and the nRF Connect app simultaneously.

  1. Initial Connection: Nordic UART Service-based BLE peripheral devices automatically connect to the gateway device. In this stage, the gateway device acts as a central device.
  2. Gateway as Peripheral: After peripheral device connection, the gateway device acts as a peripheral, advertises, and connects to the nRF Connect app.
  3. Data Sharing: Once connected to the app, the gateway device shares the connected devices' MAC IDs, device names, and Nordic UART data received from peripheral devices.
  4. Command and Data Transmission: When the app sends data or commands along with a specific peripheral device's MAC ID, the data is sent to the corresponding device.

Steps Followed:

To meet these requirements, I examined the nRF5 SDK for a suitable concurrent central and peripheral example project. The ble_app_uart_hrs_rscs project seemed like a good starting point. I incorporated parts of the ble_app_uart_c project for central NUS data handling and the ble_app_uart project for peripheral data handling. I also modified the RAM start address to 0x20004718 in the section placement macros.

However, I'm encountering a fatal error after enabling the SoftDevice. I'm unsure about the cause and whether my NUS integration into the ble_app_uart_hrs_rscs project is correct. I'll attach the code for further clarification.

 * @brief BLE Heart Rate and Running Speed relay application main file.
 *
 * @detail This application demonstrates a simple relay, which passes on the values it receives.
 * By combining a collector part on one end and a sensor part on the other,
 * the s130 can function simultaneously as a central and a peripheral device.
 *
 * The following figure shows how the sensor ble_app_hrs connects and interacts with the relay
 * in the same manner it would connect to a Heart Rate Collector. In this case, the relay
 * application acts as a central.
 *
 * On the other side, a collector (such as Master Control Panel or ble_app_hrs_c) connects
 * and interacts with the relay in the same manner it would connect to a heart rate sensor peripheral.
 *
 * LED layout:
 * LED 1: Central side is scanning. LED 2: Central side is connected to a peripheral.
 * LED 3: Peripheral side is advertising. LED 4: Peripheral side is connected to a central.
 *
 * @note While testing, make sure that the Sensor and Collector are actually connecting to the relay,
 * and not directly to each other!

  • Hi,

    First of all, I would advice that you do not use nRF5 SDK 17.0.2 for any new development, as it is not compatible with the latest generation of nRF52832. If you are starting now, I would recomend that you use the nRF Connect SDK (see nRF Connect SDK and nRF5 SDK statement). If you still decide to use the nRF5 DSK, it is strongly recomended to use nRF5 SDK 17.1.0.

    Regarding the error, error code 4 is NRF_ERROR_NO_MEM, and that is returned by nrf_ble_scan_filter_set if the number of available filters is exceeded (see API documentation). As you are adding a UUID filter here, that means that you need to incrase the NRF_BLE_SCAN_UUID_CNT in the application's sdk_config.h.

  •  ,

    I solved the issue by changing NRF_BLE_SCAN_UUID_CNT to 3 in sdk_config.h. However, I'm now encountering a fatal error within the ble_evt_handler function during BLE stack initialization.

    Here's the relevant code snippet:

    /**@brief Function for handling BLE events.
    *
    * @param[in] p_ble_evt Bluetooth stack event.
    * @param[in] p_context Unused.
    */
    static void ble_evt_handler(ble_evt_t const * p_ble_evt, void * p_context)
    {
    uint16_t conn_handle = p_ble_evt->evt.gap_evt.conn_handle;
    uint16_t role = ble_conn_state_role(conn_handle);
    NRF_LOG_INFO("Entered BLE event handler\n");

    // Based on the role this device plays in the connection, dispatch to the right handler.
    if (role == BLE_GAP_ROLE_PERIPH || ble_evt_is_advertising_timeout(p_ble_evt))
    {
    NRF_LOG_INFO("BLE GAP role: Peripheral\n");
    ble_hrs_on_ble_evt(p_ble_evt, &m_hrs);
    ble_rscs_on_ble_evt(p_ble_evt, &m_rscs);
    ble_nus_on_ble_evt(p_ble_evt, &m_nus); // Adding this line for NUS peripheral handling
    on_ble_peripheral_evt(p_ble_evt);
    }
    else if ((role == BLE_GAP_ROLE_CENTRAL) || (p_ble_evt->header.evt_id == BLE_GAP_EVT_ADV_REPORT))
    {
    NRF_LOG_INFO("BLE GAP role: Central\n");
    ble_hrs_c_on_ble_evt(p_ble_evt, &m_hrs_c);
    ble_rscs_c_on_ble_evt(p_ble_evt, &m_rscs_c);
    ble_nus_c_on_ble_evt(p_ble_evt, &m_ble_nus_c); // Need to check if this operation is necessary
    on_ble_central_evt(p_ble_evt);
    }
    }

    when the board is power up  it enters the else if condition and then crashes with a fatal error. I'll share the console log output to provide more context

    When I am debugging the code, it stops inside the idle_state_handle() function. I have attached the code above this ticket. What could be the reason for the fatal error and system reset? Is my NUS integration incorrect? Could you please help us to find the issue? Your response is invaluable.

  •  hi   ,

    To send and receive UART data from connected peripheral and central devices, we decided to add NUS. There isn't any available NUS integrated multi-link multirole example project code available to start our project. So we decided to add NUS central parts from ble_app_uart_c and peripheral parts from ble_app_uart into the ble_app_hrs_rscs example project.

    The current status of the project is that we can connect it through BLE. The peripheral is connected by the sub-master, and then the sub-master advertises and is able to connect with the nRF Connect app. The app can send NUS data to the sub-master, and the sub-master can receive it. However, I couldn't send UART data from the connected peripheral to the sub-master. The peripheral is working based on the ble_app_uart example project.

    To ensure NUS data transmission between peripheral and central devices, I'm checking ble_app_uart and ble_app_uart_c. We're taking the NUS central part from ble_app_uart_c and the peripheral part from the ble_app_uart example code. But we couldn't send UART data from a board flashed with the ble_app_uart example to a board flashed with the ble_app_uart_c example code.

    Is the ble_app_uart example capable of sending UART data only to the nRF Connect app? Or is the ble_app_uart example project board capable of sending UART data to a board flashed with the ble_app_uart_c code?

                err_code = ble_nus_c_tx_notif_enable(p_ble_nus_c);

                NRF_LOG_INFO("Connected to device with Nordic UART Service.");
                break;

            case BLE_NUS_C_EVT_NUS_TX_EVT:
                printf("chars receive \n");
                ble_nus_chars_received_uart_print(p_ble_nus_evt->p_data, p_ble_nus_evt->data_len);
                break;

            case BLE_NUS_C_EVT_DISCONNECTED:
                NRF_LOG_INFO("Disconnected.");
                scan_start();
                break;
        }
    }

    The given event handler is ble_nus_c_evt_handler. I have a doubt: Is it necessary to enable RX notification to receive data from a peripheral device using ble_nus_c_rx_notif_enable(p_ble_nus_c) when the NUS service is discovered?

  • I just made some necessary modifications to the ble_app_uart example code. These modifications involved the UART event handler and the NUS data handler.

    now the code is works .

    when receives a uart data send to connected central device .

    when receives a ble data print it on the console log .

  • We added the NUS_C and NUS parts from the ble_app_uart_c and ble_app_uart examples to the ble_app_hrs_rscs example project and made some necessary corrections in the event handlers of the central and peripheral side handlings. Now, we are able to send data to the APK through the gateway and vice versa. We have implemented bidirectional data transfer through the gateway. We are greatly appreciative of your valuable suggestions

  • Hi,

    I am glad to hear. Does that mean that you got everyting working, or are there remaining issues?
