LwM2M no longer required for Verizon carrier certification?

Hello,

I have read conflicting information on whether Verizon requires the LwM2M library to certify on their network. We will be certifying a nRF9151 modem.

This Nordic page says it's required as of January 29, 2025 :https://docs.nordicsemi.com/bundle/comp_matrix_nrf9151/page/COMP/nrf9151/nrf9151_operator_certifications.html#d15e57

However, my understanding is that LwM2M was historically required for FOTA verification (Through the Nokia Motive Portal). According to Verizon's latest webinars, their slides state "Accept ANY FOTA solution for Host devices (proprietary or Verizon)".

Thus, why is LwM2M still required?

Thanks,

Derek

  • Hi Derek,

My understanding is that Verizon's certification requires a FOTA path that is typically provided by Verizon's FOTA service and requires the carrier library. If you've heard conflicting information on what is needed, you should contact your Verizon representative on what is needed, as they are the final authority on the Verizon carrier certification process.

  • Hey Mariano,

Thanks for the quick reply. I will reach out to our Verizon certification contact and report my findings here.

    Thanks,

    Derek

  • Hey Mariano,

I reached out to Verizon's technical team via email and received the following replies to my questions:

Question 1: If "any" FOTA solution is now accepted, is LwM2M support still required by cellular modules in IOT devices?

"A1: Verizon requires DM clients (OMADM or LWM2M) for each device that is certified. These functions download the APN into the module and remote APN provisioning is a requirement for certification. The FOTA solution had to deal specifically with Verizon accepting host device OEM FOTA Solutions, not discontinuing Nokia Motive."

Question 2: If LwM2M support is still required, then why if not for FOTA?

"A2: You are not required to provide your own FOTA solution and may still certify with Nokia Motive. FOTA is a requirement and remote APN management is a requirement."

    Summary:

To summarize Verizon's replies, even when you use your own FOTA solution, LwM2M is still required for APN provisioning.

    Thanks,

    Derek
