softsim integration into a existing project without disabling FOTA.

Hi,

A few months ago, I raised a ticket regarding the integration of SoftSIM into the nrf_cloud_multi_service  sample. With the help of one of your support engineers, I was able to get it working by disabling App FOTA and MCUboot.

That workaround was fine for initial testing, but now I need to integrate SoftSIM without disabling App FOTA or MCUboot, since both features are critical for our production firmware.

Has anyone successfully done this, or is there an updated approach recommended by Nordic?

Appreciate any guidance or references you can provide. 

The sdk version I'm working with is 2.6.2.

Are you still using the nrf_cloud_multi_service  sample as base for your production firmware? I will need to forward internally to discuss the previous ticket and what causes it to work without FOTA and MCUBoot.

Hello, my apologies for my late response, my answer had not been sent. 

The developers that worked with the nrf_cloud_multi_service sample are no longer with the company and I'm trying to find other resources to assist with this. As pointed out in the pull request, the APP FOTA and MCUboot were disabled to conserve flash for SoftSIM use.

I understand, and hope that we are able to assist you in best possible way. Unfortunately, I do not believe we have any available resources at the moment. I suggest reaching out to your regional sales representative to discuss a solution if quicker support is needed. 


Are you able to provide what exactly you need in your project? What exactly from the  nrf_cloud_multi_service sample is it you need? Would it be better to use the Asset Tracker template, which is a framework for developing IoT applications on nRF91-based devices. Have a look at the Customization and Extension chapter.

Does the asset tracker template support SoftSIM?! All we want to do is implement SoftSIM in our application without having to sacrfice FOTA. Even if I use the asset tracker I would still need to find a way to implement SoftSIM on it without disabling FOTA. The reason we didn't go with the asset tracker is that it was too complex comapred to the multi cloud sample, which was more than enough for our application.

When we started developing our application we didn't see any framework called asset tracker rather a sample application called asset tracker v2 which was in maintainance mode back then, and for new projects we were suggested to use the nrf_cloud_multi_service sample.

I can see that the naming is very confusing in regards to Asset Tracker v2 vs Asset Tracker template. The Asset Tracker template was introduced with nRF Connect SDK v3.0.0, it is an out-of-tree application that can be found under nRF Connect SDK Add-ons. 

I am discussing internally to get more information on the Asset Tracker template and SoftSIM support. From what I can understand it should be support for it.

I'll get back to you within today or tomorrow with more information.

Moen Asif Does the SoftSIM integration support SDK versions beyond 2.6.2? My last review indicated that the SoftSIM implementation from Onmondo was built to support up to SDK v2.6.2. If we disable the sys build, would it then be possible to integrate SoftSIM with SDK v3.0.0?

Hi Akshay , Yes, the SoftSIM is supported up to 2.9 now, let me doublecheck regarding 3.0.0. I believe it should be supported directly, but let me get back to you on that.

Hello Moen Asif  and Akshay , there should be support for SoftSIM in nRF Connect SDK v3.0.0, from what I've been informed. 

The steps for SoftSIM are found here: https://github.com/onomondo/nrf-softsim, which should be able to integrate with https://github.com/nrfconnect/Asset-Tracker-Template. I have not been able to fully test on my side as my schedule is fully committed. But I'm still looking into details.
