Unexpected 4 mA Spikes Every 1 s When SoftDevice Enabled – How to Avoid Them?

Hi,

I’m testing low-power behavior on an nRF52811 device.

  • When SoftDevice is not enabled, calling nrf_pwr_mgmt_run() gives me a stable ~5 µA average with no visible spikes — working as expected.

  • When SoftDevice is enabled, the average current is around 5.7 µA (which is fine), but I see current spikes of ~4 mA for ~100 µs every 1 second.

I want to avoid these periodic spikes.

Questions:

  1. What SoftDevice activity causes these ~1 s internal wakeups and 4 mA spikes, and how can I disable or suppress them?

    • I’m not doing any advertising or connections.

    • this state is after ble_adv_idle event
  2. What is the lowest achievable sleep current with the SoftDevice enabled, without any external interrupts?

    • Is ~5–6 µA the expected minimum?

    • Can the periodic wakeups be completely eliminated?

Any guidance on configuration, SoftDevice settings, or required API calls to reach minimum sleep current would be helpful.

Thanks!

edit: for refrence

I got the same results by using nordic ble buttonless dfu example (with adv start commented out)

  • Hi,

    I think this is due to the app timer that you start in the code:

    static void application_timers_start(void)
    {
    /* YOUR_JOB: Start your timers. below is an example of how to start a timer.
    uint32_t err_code;
    err_code = app_timer_start(m_app_timer_id, TIMER_INTERVAL, NULL);
    APP_ERROR_CHECK(err_code); */
    }

    I couldn't find the definition of TIMER_INTERVAL so difficult to see if the timeout aligns with your measurements. But you could try to comment out that as well,

    best regards
