nRF Connect SDK error messages when flashing custom board

Hi,

Using nRF Connect SDK v3.3.0, Toolchain v3.3.0, nRF Connect for VS Code 2026.7.2128, and J-Link V9.24a, I see the following errors when flashing a custom board connected via the standard wiring method to P20 on an nRF52840DK:

Applying system reset.
Run.
-- runners.nrfjprog: Board(s) with serial number(s) 683268243 flashed successfully.
* Terminal will be reused by tasks, press any key to close it.

This did not previously occur.  I have seen at least one other posting in DevZone from many months ago, but no resolution.  The board seems to be programmed ok, but with these messages, I don't have high confidence everything is ok.  I have not tried any debugging at this time.

Questions:

  • What do the SeggerBackend errors indicate?
  • What do the informational messages in green indicate?  These also did not appear before.

Thank you,

Ken

  • Hello!

Thanks for reaching out! I see from you logs that west is using nrfjprog as runner. The nrfjprog software is deprecated and has been replaced with nRF Util. The output you are seeing is consistent with what we've seen before when using nrfjprog after deprecation. With that said, this should not be a problem when using an updated toolchain. Can you verify that the build is actually using the v3.3.0 toolchain?

    Best regards,
    Carl Richard

  • Hi Carl,

Here is a screen shot of the build_2 build configuration in question:

    C:\ncs\toolchains\toolchains.json contains:

Doing a Manage toolchains > Validate toolchain pops up: "No issues were detected with the toolchain."

All the logging in a pristine build reference v3.3.0.

All that seems as expected.  What else can I check for us?  Where is the configuration for nRF Util vs. nrfjprog?

    I also checked nrfutil:

One more bit of info:  If I hover over the build_2 configuration/context in the APPLICATIONS panel, I see "Flash runner: nrfjprog".  I bet that is not good, but I don't know where that is set.

Looking forward to what I should try next!

    Thank you,

    Ken
