Debugger sometimes fails to stop at entry point with nRF Connect for VS Code 2026.9.2823 (Windows)

Hi,

I am experiencing an intermittent issue with the debugger in nRF Connect for VS Code version 2026.9.2823 on Windows.

Environment:

  • nRF Connect for VS Code: 2026.9.2823
  • OS: Windows
  • Target: nRF52840 with MCUboot (sysbuild)
  • NCS version: v3.4.1

Symptoms:

  • When launching the debugger using "Debug without Flashing", the MCU sometimes does not stop at the entry point and all threads remain in "running" state
  • It works occasionally (roughly 1 out of 5 times), but restarting the debugger almost always causes it to fail again
  • This issue did not occur with the previous version of the extension

Root cause identified from debug console logs:

When the debugger works correctly, the following events appear in the debug console:

When it fails, these events never appear and the debugger never stops.

It seems like a race condition where the entry point breakpoint (entryPoint: '*0x26408') is missed because the MCU has already passed main before the debugger attaches.

Question:

  • Is this a known issue on Windows?
  • Is there a workaround available?

    I have not found any similar known issues, and neither have I been able to reproduce what you experience. If it is (as you suggest) a race condition, then the issue may depend on the system. We need to look further into it, and it may take some time. In the mean time, if debugging with flashing works (i.e. the normal way), then I suggest that as a workaround.
