No network interface to work with on nrf9160

Hello,

I followed the getting started guide but the kit can't connect. I'm getting this error:

net_if.net_if_init: There is no network interface to work with!

Is this a known bug, how can i fix it? Or is there a hardware issue?

Kind regards,

Daan Pape

  • finally got my board connected. The issue has been the LTE-M1 coverage at my location. I moved my board to another place and finally got connection. BTW I switched my SIM to the AT&T's one. Haven't tested the iBasic yet. Those who has gone to the step where the board is searching for LTE towers should have no hardware issue. It may just be your location is not covered by your carrier. Happy connecting.

  • Thank you for sharing . It's encouraging. Slight smile

My current understanding is that, in Canada, iBasis works through Bell, which may not have full national support for LTE-M (I am saying this because I was not able to find an official LTE-M coverage map online). And maybe the Twilio cards I ordered are also working with Bell.

I know for sure, on the other hand, that Telus is advertising support for LTE-M in my area (based on their coverage map), so I guess the next logical step for me will be to order a SIM from Telus and try again. I'll share my results here in a few weeks from now.

  • Hi Daan, iBasis has confirmed that there is an issue in the NL and that they are sorting it out and in Belgium there appears to be a coverage issue.

  • Hi guys,

first I just want to say thanks for all the feedback with regards to the LTE Link Monitor, iBasis SIMs and coverage issues.

and : iBasis has confirmed that they have some issues with LTE-M in the NL. They are sorting this out now.

: Great, happy to hear that you've been able to connect to AT&T!

: Did you have any luck manually connecting to one of the networks in your area?

: nRF9120 is the SoC used inside the nRF9160 SiP. Are you still having issues connecting with the iBasis SIM in Sweden?

: You could try contacting your local Nordic RSM and ask if they have any information regarding the LTE-M Coverage from Bell in Canada or if they have tried using a Telus SIM.

  • Hi , no luck in manual connection. I tried with AT commands but always getting error.

I called and sent emails to t-mobile, only operator in Croatia who provide NB-IoT network and they told me that possible reason for no connection is that i don't have data plan for NB-IoT. Problem with this is that their data plan is being selled only to business users (companies) and they can't help me with that. Also they told me that all their sim cards work without problems and supports NB-IoT, which is contradictory with their previous answer.

I don't see any logic in what they talking to me. Ok, if i don't have data plan i should sucesfully connect but than i would not be able to send any data, that's ok. Also if iBasis sim card is trying to connect to same t-mobile network, in theory why roming should not work, iBasis have their own data plan and uses it, not theirs.

I purchased another sim card (4 cards tested so far in total) from them and i got same problems - modem found some network, try to connect but after mili second it seems like it disconnects. Signal bars fill up but after that goes blank.
