nRF9160 Trouble upgrading Modem Firmware

Hey Nordic Community ,

I have been trying to get the Modem firmware up and running without success for a few days now (Attempted with 2 different PCs and 2 DK with same results) , I hope someone can help me out.

- I have followed all the steps on the detailed tutorial [https://devzone.nordicsemi.com/nordic/cellular-iot-guides/b/getting-started-cellular/posts/getting-started-with-nrf9160-dk]

- However during 'Updating the Modem' step , I am not able to read the NRF9160 on nRFConnect v3.0.0 or Update Modem

- when I try using nrfprog to read using  ' nrfjprog --memrd 0 --n 1024 -f nrf91 '  , I get Error : "JLinkARM DLL reported an error. Try again...."

- Here is my latest version : nrfjprog version: 10.3.0 , JLinkARM.dll version: 6.48b

- I have also tried JlinkARM.dll versions 6.40 , 6.44e , 6.48b , and nrfjprog versions 10.2.1

Hi Gurbir,

Please check your device manager:

As you can see I have two nrf91DKs hooked up to the computer.

Are there any LEDs blinking on the DK?

Check with the command 'nrfjprog -v' that you have the correct versions.

It is important that you use a micro USB cable that actually supports sending data. We have seen that some cables only support power, no data. (Typical charging cable)

Hello, Gurbir!

Could you check if the switch SW5 is set to nRF91 and not nRF52? Secondly, are you using the same cable when testing the two kits. If so that could be an issue.

Edit: please state whether the device appear as connected or not in the OS of your computer.

Hey Martin ,

Thanks for the quick reply, I appreciate the help .

- I have 1 DK currently connected to my Computer (3 COM Ports)

- I just tried 2/3 cables which I often use with NRF51/52 with No success

- The Debug IC (PCA10090) LED is turned on , but the other LEDs(LED 1~4) are not blinking

- Running all the latest versions

Hey Carl,

- When The SW5 is set to nRF91 (Device appears in the OS) , also I get this JlinkARM.dll error

- When I connect SW5 to nRF52 (Device appears in the OS) , I can read using nrfjprog and nRFConnect

[Solution] : If for some reason you cannot read the NRF91 using the cmd or nrfConnect App , make sure you have Switch 10 in 'INT Position' [Toggle a few times just in case it doesnt work at first ]
