Out of the box failure

Dear Nordic,

just got my Thingy:91 out of the box and followed the instruction.

Very surprised that the device could not connect (blue led flashing slowly every 5sec). I'm in Geneva Switzerland about 500m from the next Swisscom 4G antenna.

What should I do now?

This is very unpleasant as the presentation showed something "so easy to evaluate".

Now I guess I have to buy a special SIM card from Swisscom and be only inside the city-center?

Thanks in advance for your support

  • Well I tried to contact Swisscom without success.

I do have other SIMcard in hand but how to change APN in the modem?

Also I don't have PUK on these SIM cards so how shall I register these unit on the nrf cloud?

  • Hello,

I'm sorry to hear that it is not working for you.

just got my Thingy:91 out of the box and followed the instruction.

What instructions did you follow? And at what point did it fail?

Very surprised that the device could not connect (blue led flashing slowly every 5sec)

Can you please provide more information from the LTE Link Monitor. This should include more information on what is failing when trying to connect.

Blue LED indicates that it's receiving "Environmental Data Only" according to the Thingy:91 User Guide

    Thank you!

    Kind regards,
    Øyvind

  • Is there no serial bootloader in your chip?

    or FOTA ?

    or BLE bootloader?

    Thanks again for your support

  • We are constantly working on improving modem updates. Currently, the provided solution is the only method to update the modem FW.
On the application side, we do have several ways of updating e.g. Updating application firmware on nRF9160 using USB (MCUboot).

That said until we find the solution, we have to try everything. Your device does find the network. Did you contact iBasis and Swisscom (email provided) as instructed?

      Kind regards,
      Øyvind

    1. Hello Oyvind,

Yes I sent an email to Swisscom M.Bertling) but no reply so far.

I will try update via serial but I need the hex file. Where can I download it?

      thanks in advance

      Ivan

Our precompiled firmware is available in the download section of Thingy:91.

    3. Hi Ivan,

I've forwarded your case to our modem team. Looks like there might be an issue with iBasis and SwissCom network. Awaiting confirmation.

      Kind regards,
      Øyvind
