Distance measurement between two nRF52840

Hello,

I am using nRF52840, S140 v7.0.1. We want to measure distance between two nRF52840 with BLE 1 Mbps and 0 dBm.

I am referring below two links.

In this its mentioned as 248 meters.

https://devzone.nordicsemi.com/nordic/nordic-blog/b/blog/posts/nrf52840-dk-range-testing-with-ble-zigbee-and-thread-protocols-at-0-4-and-8dbm-transmit-power-settings

In this its mentioned as 654.92 meters.

I am not sure which one is accurate. Please let me know which results can be taken as reference.

Thanks & Regards

  • Hi,

Estimating range is very difficult, and it strongly depends on the environment the devices are in. E.g. Outdoor, indoor, Line-of-sight or not, 2.4GHz RF Interference/noise, how good the antenna is tuned, etc

Note that in the first link(248m), testing was done with a Samsung S8 and nRF52840 DK, but in the second link(654m), 2 nRF52840 DKs was used. That could effect the range. Also note that the 654.92m test was done outdoors, line-of-sight, and in a very low noise RF environment.
