I am not able to update/upload modem firmware or application firmware.

Im following the guidance to upload modem code and application code, downloaded from project page, onto the Thingy:91.

Current state, after following guidance, is: I hold down SW4 on power up, windows system recognizes a device, the nRF Connect (v3.4.1) - Programmer has a device to select. This device is listed as '0.01' - Serial port: COM11. Only a single serial port.

filename for modem firmware: mfwnrf9160120.zip.

The application I would like to load is the thingy91_Item_2020-04-29_bc7ade8b.hex.

It appears that possibly the bootloader is corrupted?

  • Hi Ryan,
    Which version of the Thingy:91 do you have?

    When upgrading through the USB  you need to hold down SW3 while turning ON the thingy:91.

    -> Modem upgrade

    -> Application Programming

    Since you are programming application throughout USB you need to use one of the precompiled files in the "images_dfu_hex" folder.

    (if using an external debug probe you would use the "image_full" versions)

    If you have any issues please share the log output.

    Best regards,
    Martin L.

  • I have the NRF6943.

    When I hold down the SW3 while turning ON thingy:91, the Windows system does not connect via USB. Only when I hold down SW4 does it actually connect to the device.  When the device does connect, the Programmer software only sees one com port and the device is listed with the name '0.01'.

    Just turning on the device while connected to USB and not holding down any switch, the windows system does not connect to any device.

    My first attempt with doing a firmware upgrade went, mostly, as the instructions stated. Hold SW3, recognize device, try modem update, but at point the process failed out and gave a warning that MCUBoot was not enabled. The device is now in this state. I got it to update SIP firmware once, but now it will not update any firmware and disconnects after attempting to go through step 1 (upload).
