Does the nrf5340 chip and/or SDK Support LE Audio and LC3 codec?

I have seen multiple posts about the nrf5340 that confuse me. Posts like this one say that the board/chip is not available yet, as of 4 days ago. But after looking through the Nordic website, I found both the chip for sale and the sdk for sale below:

https://www.nordicsemi.com/About-us/BuyOnline?search_token=nRF5340-DK&series_token=nRF5340

https://www.nordicsemi.com/About-us/BuyOnline?search_token=nRF5340

And I was able to get both of these items in a cart to buy from DigiKey.

https://www.digikey.ca/en/products/detail/NRF5340-DK/1490-NRF5340-DK-ND/13544603?itemSeq=367803586

https://www.digikey.ca/en/products/detail/nordic-semiconductor-asa/NRF5340-QKAA-AB0-R7/11200028

So it looks like they ARE available? Is this a different version of the nrf5340 that doesn't support LE audio and LC3 codec? What would I be buying if I purchased these from DigiKey?

  • Hello,

I have seen multiple posts about the nrf5340 that confuse me. Posts like this one say that the board/chip is not available yet, as of 4 days ago.
But after looking through the Nordic website, I found both the chip for sale and the sdk for sale below:

You seem to have confused information about the SoC / Chip (nRF5340), the nRF5340 Development Kit (DK), and a dedicated platform ( DK / SDK ) for audio development. Simon's answer in the ticket linked by Overbekk still stands, but you may purchase both the nRF5340 DK and the nRF5340 SoC on its own, if you would like to. We however have not published any LE Audio development material yet.

So it looks like they ARE available? Is this a different version of the nrf5340 that doesn't support LE audio and LC3 codec? What would I be buying if I purchased these from DigiKey?

The nRF5340 SoC and accompanying DK is available. The nRF5340 is compatible with BLE 5.2, and it is our recommended SoC for LE Audio development, however we have yet to publish any material on how you should proceed with this. I strongly recommend that you contact your local RSM if you have questions about how to proceed with this.

As a closing statement, I must say as my colleague Simon in the ticket you reference in your post - We do not discuss future releases and roadmaps here on DevZone, and if you have questions about this you would have to direct them to your Regional Sales Manager (RSM). If you do not know who your RSM is, please send me a personal message with your location, so I may provide you with their contact info.

    Best regards,
    Karl

  • Thanks for the info. I just want to make sure I understand.

The nrf5340 chip and SDK that are available are the same chip and SDK's that you recommend to use for LE Audio products?

So is the hardware is ready, but the softdevice to support LE Audio is not? Or is the softdevice ready, but using the API's and libraries for LE Audio is complex and Nordic has not released the example project/documentation on how to use LE Audio with the chip yet?

No problem at all, I am happy to help!

    Yes, the nRF5340 is ready.

Not exactly - the nRF5340 is the chip we recommend for LE Audio products, however, we have currently not released any specific LE Audio SDK or examples for LE Audio development. For questions about this, you will have to reach out to your RSM.

  • I see. I think I am confused about what the SDK is. When I say SDK I mean the blue development board. But I'm seeing now by SDK you're referring to libraries or API's or softdevices etc?

    What is an SDK exactly?

  • Oh, I see - yes, by SDK I am referring to the Software Development Kit, as opposed to the (Hardware) Development Kit (the blue nrf development boards). The SDK does indeed contain all the drivers and libraries.

    Best regards,
    Karl
