Firmware Upgrade / Asset Tracking disabling

Hi Everyone,

I was wondering if it is something I do wrong, or if there is an issue with my module.

I have never managed to successfully upgrade the firmware of my nRF9160 Thingy:91.

I am using the nRF Connect v3.7.1 with the Programmer tool.

I have followed the documentation and tried the SW3 Button + Power Button + Add Hex File method. I have tried the SW4 Button + Power Button + Zip file method

But the upgrade never goes through and I often end up with a message such as "Please make sure that the device is in MCUboot and try again" (depending on the method choosen).

The current firmware version on the Thingy:91 is mfw_nrf9160_1.1.1

My end goal is to disable the AssetTracker entirely (so that it won't Power Cycle when I don't want it to), and I believe that was the only possibility.

Any idea to disable the Asset Tracker would be most welcome !

Cheers,

Mathieu

  • Ok I just now managed to flash the firmware as suggested :

    SW4 + Power + img_fota_dfu_hex\thingy91_nrf52_connectivity_bridge_2021-06-28_7a076c22.hex

    then

    SW3 + Power + mfw_nrf9160_1.3.0.zip

I think J-link was not installed at all... after executing the .exe the nrfjprog --version command properly showed the installed versions.

Launching the flash procedure was successful.

I will have tou double check that the Asset Tracker is correctly disabled.

    Cheers

  • Happy to hear that you were able to solve the issue.

Does your kit function as expected now?

    Kind regards,
    Øyvind

  • Hi Oyvind,

Took me some time to dive back into this.

After the successful firmware flashing from last time, I can now connect my device correctly to LTE Link Monitor, but the device doesn't seem to answer to any AT commands sent.

The USB drive is mounted, but there are no LED lighting up when starting the device.

So either the firmware wasn't correctly flashed, or I missed a step ! Any idea ?

    Thanks,

    Mathieu

  • Hi Oyvind,

    No it doesn't Disappointed

    See my latest answer below...

  • What application are you running on the device? Did you reprogram the Asset Tracker application after updating the modem?

This sounds correct as the USB is handled by the nRF53840, running connectivity bridge. The Asset Tracker controls the LED. Once you have program the modem FW, it will erase the application memory of the nRF9160, which means you need to reprogram the Asset Tacker.
