NRF5340 Bluetooth Antenna issue

I am working on a wearable device and using NRF5340 SoC. I am confused about Bluetooth communication. Do I have to use external antenna for Bluetooth data transmission or NRF5340 has built-in Bluetooth transvers in the chip? If I have to use external antenna then do i have any information regarding the design of antenna? My wearable device does not have much space for antenna. I will also welcome any alternative chip suggestion if NRF5340 does not have built-in BLE system. Thanks

  • Hi Zunuran,

The nRF5340 definitely has a built in 2.4 GHz radio with BLE support, all our nRF devices do.

Yes, you will need an external antenna, which is usually either a PCB antenna (a trace in the PCB), or a chip antenna. You'll also need some external components for the antenna's so called "matching circuit". Please see my colleague's comprehensive answer for an overview on antenna selection:  RE: Matching network and antenna selection

Once you make a selection, you can find reference values for the matching circuit in our Infocenter. Nordic can also help with reviewing your hardware design, and with tuning your antenna and the matching circuit components.

    Best regards,

    Raoul
