nrf9160 DK EPS Registeration

Hi to everyone,

I am having trouble establishing a network connection with NRF9160 Dk. I use a local SIM and according to the information I got from the provider, there is no problem with my card but my device is "undefined" in the network. I also did not manage to establish a connection with iBASIS too.

When I received the development card, I firsty full erase the chip via nRFConnect Programmer and then upload asset tracker application...

I read such an info:

"If you carelessly erase the entire flash inside the nRF91, you would lose the key that cause failure to link to the network."

More:

that link

May it cause problem to link to network ?

  • Hi!

Okay, this is what I can see from the log file you attached.

First off, you intend to use NB-IoT, correct?

    Line 102: +CNEC_EMM: 15

    Line 107: +CEREG: 4,"FFFE","FFFFFFFF",9,0,15,"11100000","11100000"

EPS mobility management error 15 and <reject_cause> 15 in the +CEREG response indicate the same thing

No suitable cells in tracking area.
This EMM cause is sent to the UE if it requests service, or if the network initiates a detach request, in a tracking area where the UE, by subscription, is not allowed to operate, but when it should find another allowed tracking area or location area in the same PLMN or an equivalent PLMN.

From the log it looks like you're only giving it 7 minutes, is this correct?

Could you try it for a little longer so the UE has time to search all available cells in your area?

    Best regards,

    heidi

    Hi Heidi,

I added the modem trace for your evaluation. (The MFW is 1.2.3, application is AWS_IOT sample)

Meanwhile I have talked with Turkcell technical team and they confirmed that our SIM card is ok, but the device (NRF9160DK) is "unknown" for them and they did not see any attempt to link to the network on their screen. I have tested with iBASIS, Turkcell DATA Sim Card, Turkcell M2M Sim Card and all have same result.

    Regards,

    Hamit

  • Hi, I need the log file from the application as well. Do you have it available?

It looks like the earlier logs you sent were from the Asset Tracker application. Did you try a new application?

  • Hi Heidi,

i have almost checked all the available applications in the sdk. i did not record the log files separately. please say which app's log file do you need and then i can collect and send...

    Regards,
    Hamit

  • I just need the log file from the application that is running on the device when you took the modem trace so I can see where the application is and then match that to the modem trace.

If it's the same to you, please use the Asset Tracker application when collecting a modem trace. This way it's easier to rule out other errors from the application.

Also, make sure to use the version of the application that works with NB-IoT, since it looks like that's the cells the device is finding.

You can either use the already compiled binaries on our website (images_full/nrf9160dk_asset_tracker_nbiot-<>.hex) or if you're building and flashing yourself, enable CONFIG_LTE_NETWORK_MODE_NBIOT_GPS  and disable CONFIG_LTE_NETWORK_MODE_LTE_M_GPS.

    Best regards,

    Heidi

  • Hi Heidi,

Sorry for late reply, I was talking with Turkcell technical support team about the connection issue. Problem was that the "nbiot "APN" was not defined the M2M SIM Cards initially and Nordic dk was not registered to the network. Therefore, i was rejected by network via cause #15 and cause #19:

Now Turkcell was add our UE to the network and define the "nbiot" APN to my SIM card. Problem is solved.

    For the reference:

I still cannot link to the network with iBASIS Sim Cards. I think iBASIS needs a TURKCELL registered APN, which needs to be embedded on your MFW. I am not sure, you may evaluate it for later operations.

    Thank you for your support.

    Regards,

    Hamit

  • Hi, that's good to hear!

Yes, it looks like iBasis does not have a roaming agreement with Turkcell so the SIM card won't work in that area (iBasis coverage map).

    Best regards,

    Heidi
