Can't Update the Thingy:53 Firmwares, nor Connect it to Edge Impulse

I have not been successful to updating the firmware of the Thingy:53 board, and I have tried all methods indicated here: https://developer.nordicsemi.com/nRF_Connect_SDK/doc/latest/nrf/ug_thingy53_gs.html

1. Updating through Bluetooth LE: The preloaded Edge Impulse firmware fails to connect, so I tried to update it with the nRF Programmer mobile app. After 10 attempts I managed to update it, however it still can't connect to Edge Impulse.

2. Updating through USB: This method fails for any firmware that I want to update, since it indicates the message "Error when fetching device versions...", so it does not activate the Write icon.

3. Updating through external debug probe: Following the steps in this method gives me this confusing message with the thingy:91 board:

Please update the firmwares of this board. I found a similar issue that was reported two months ago, and it doesn't seem to be solved:  Problem with Getting started with Thingy:53

Kind regards

  • Hi,

    1. Can you see the thingy53 advertise as EdgeImpulse with the nRFConnect mobile app? What do you use to connect Edge Impulse? Please try with nRF Edge Impulse.

    2. Remove the top cover on the thing53 and Press SW2 while switching SW1 to the ON position.

    3. Please use nRF5340DK and select the file under hci_rpmsg/merged_CPUNET.hex and zephyr/merged_CPUAPP.hex  Edge_Impulse folder.

    Regards,
    Amanda

  • Hi Amanda! Thanks for your tips.

    1. Today, the Thingy:53 board is not detected by the nRF Programmer application.

Two days ago I could see the Nordic board, but now I can't.

Before upgrading any firmware, I tried to connect this thingy:53 to Edge Impulse via PC-serial port with command "edge-impulse-daemon" and it didn't connect.

So I used the App to update the firmwares.

First I updated the firmware "Pheriperal LBS" and everything was OK, the board could be detected without problems and the LED was flashing.

The problem was when I updated the Edge Impulse firmware. The App and the Thingy:53 board were easily disconnected, it seems that there were conflicts to communicate via BT, and after many attempts I was able to upload the firmware and now the Thingy:53 board can´t be detected by the App.

    2. But when I connect the Thingy:53 board with the PC, it can be detected by the serial port.

    3. I followed your instructions. When I tried to install Edge Impulse firmware using this compressed file "2022-08-03-precompiled-application-firmware.zip" provided on the Nordic website, I got the error below:

And the "Write" icon was not activated.

But when I useed the firmware found on the Edge-Impulse website (nordic-thingy53-full.zip), I got this message:

There is no error and the "write" icon is not active either.

That is all! Your instructions are correct, but something is wrong with this Thingy:53 board. Maybe U uploaded a corrupt firmware. I don't know. If this board could be reseted to the factory mode.

    Kind regards

    Guillermo

  • Hi Guillermo,

While updating through USB, it should choose the zip file as edge_impulse_1.0.0_thingy53_nrf5340.zip under 2022-08-03-precompiled-application-firmware\Edge_Impulse.

.hex files are for the external debugger programming.

We are fixing the bug as you see from that case. Sorry for the inconvenience.

  • Hello

I'm also having problem with the thingy53.

I can't upload a firmware wireless because it never manages to validate the connection, I do it successfully via USB but I have the problem that we can detect with the nrf Connect app but it never manages to establish the bluetooth connection but the device shows the LEDs (green and yellow) as if it were. I have tried with android and iphone and have the same problem

  • Hi,

Please create a new case for your own issue. Thanks.

  • I have similar issues connecting the Thingy 53 as initially asks for Authentication on my Android mobile and if you don't agree it fails to pair leaving the device unable to connect with the lights flashing showing the device is working?

The device doesn't recognise via the Desktop app unless you but it into Bootloader mode and it updates firmware via usb but fails to recognise via the apps so it appears to be a common issue...?

  • Hi,

Please create a new support case for your own issue. Thanks.
